to drive downstream plant. International studies have shown that these pumps operate anywhere between 15% and 40% below their best efficiency. By reducing
this level of wastage South African industry could dramatically reduce its operating costs while alleviating the nation's power shortage.

WISA conference to highlight challenges and solutions in water reclamation and re-use
This year's Water Institute of South Africa (WISA) conference, running concurrently with Afriwater 2011, will focus on 'Mining, Industrial
and Municipal Water Reclamation and Re-use.' This conference comes at a time when South Africa is grappling with the challenges of treating municipal
wastewater, preventing further pollution of water sources by industry and dealing with untreated acidic mine water, making it an important event
for the South African water industry.

A study commissioned by the trade union United Association of South Africa (Uasa) to establish the real impact of the South African water crisis on the country
revealed that any decrease in the quality and therefore usability of water in South Africa by 1% may result in the loss of 200 000 jobs, a drop of 5,7% in
disposable income per capita, and an increase of 5% or R18,1-billion in government spending.
